The Threshing Barn

Old Alresford Year of Completion 2006 Architect

Haddow Partnership Ltd

Architects Comments: Robin Haddow –  We have worked together for many years on individual houses for private clients and I have great confidence in Coleman’s providing us with a quality job and satisfied clients. Always a pleasure to work with them.

Clients Comments: Mr and Mrs Naismith –  After an extensive search we appointed Coleman’s to create our dream home from a derelict and extremely distressed barn. It was a very major project, taking over a year to complete and with all the challenges of a listed building, disintegrating timbers, the vision of a modern interior and very demanding clients. Philip, James and their team were simply magnificent. Coleman’s took a lead coordinating role amongst the architect, a designer, the QS and us, the clients, so that communications were strong, problems quickly found solutions and decisions were made quickly and appropriately. The quality of the work completed was fantastic – huge sympathy was shown for the core building and this was then matched with attention to detail for the contemporary interior where there is no place to hide shoddy craftsmanship. Everyone has stories of issues with their contractors..… but we have none, something that Philip, James and his team should be very pleased about. We are extremely proud of our beautiful home and much of the success of the project was down to the teamwork, attention to detail and friendly, supportive approach demonstrated by Coleman Building Company. Thank you!

Description of Works: This project is one we are particularly proud of. Working to a design from ‘Haddow Partnership Ltd’ we converted this 300 year old listed agricultural barn into a residential dwelling. Working very closely with Winchester City Councils Conservation Department, we carried out a very complicated and delicate operation to achieve what you see in the photos. Combining a traditional exterior of oak boarding, bespoke oak windows and a thatched roof with a very contemporary clean and slick internal finish. Structurally, we had to rebuild about 85% of the oak frame, repeating the original/traditional carpentry methods and repairing any salvageable timbers. Underpinning of external walls was inevitable and we rebuilt all walls whilst the original oak frame above was still in position above. The internal finish is very contemporary, with a magnificent kitchen being the focal point. We also created many other features such as designer fireplaces, intelligent lighting, glass sliding screens, cantilevered stairs (complete manufacture in-house) handmade oak internal doors, aluminium sliding external doors, audio/visual system throughout, walk in showers, integrated vacuum system, oak/natural stone flooring and more. The following are awards won by this project: International Design Awards 2008 – Interior Design for Renovation: 3rd place, The Alresford Society Rose Bowl Award 2007 and Ibstock Downland Prize – 2006: Shortlisted
